Working with Smalti to create flow, texture and light
Thursday 22nd and Friday 23rd April 2021
to be held at Mosaics by Design Studio, Blackwood
Fourteen years ago I travelled to Italy to attend a workshop run by Luciana Notturni at the Ravenna Mosaic Art School. Since then I have returned to Italy twice to attend an Artefact workshop with Romuald Mesdagh and another at the Orsoni Smalti factory in Venice. Each workshop was distinct in their teaching but at all workshops I was taught with the beautiful medium of smalti. The rich blend of colours and ability to capture light through texture is what makes smalti so appealing.
The focus of this workshop will be on andamento, (the flow and direction of the tesserae). We will concentrate on the correct placement of tesserae to create flow and movement to your mosaic. The design process of a monochromatic mosaic ( tones of one colour) will also be covered. Participants will use the traditional hammer and hardie as well as their nippers. There will also be a demonstration on how to transfer your finished piece to a permanent substrate. Don’t miss out! Class numbers are limited to 8 people per workshop.
Cost: $350 includes all materials.
